More BIIF girls basketball matches were held Tuesday night.
KSH 66 – CLA 3
The Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i girls varsity basketball team crushed its home opener — defeating visitor Christian Liberty Academy 66-3.
KSH scored 28 points during the first quarter and 24 in the second for a whopping, 52-2 halftime lead.
The majority of the Warriors’ total score came courtesy of Keanu Huihui and Maela Honma — who scored 24 apiece, all during the first two quarters and on field goals.
Alex Gray scored the Canefire’s sole field goal, and teammate Chesney Jo Hara sank one of two free throw attempts.
Now 2-0 in BIIF and 4-1 overall, the Warriors have defeated both neighboring Kea‘au schools (Kea‘au HS and CLA) and will next turn their attention southward — hosting Ka‘u High next week.
The Canefire will also play its next BIIF match against the Trojans, taking a trip over the Volcano for a 3 p.m. Saturday bout at the Ka‘u District Gym.
HPA 42 – Pahoa 15
Following an opening-night loss to Konawaena last week, Hawaii Prep girls basketball bounced back Tuesday with a 42-15 rout of Pahoa at Castle Gym. Ka Makani improved to 1-1 overall while the Daggers remained winless at 0-2.
HPA was led by Brooke Samura, who finished with an impressive 30-point, 16-rebound, nine-steal statline.
HPA next heads to Kauai for an inter-island tournament this week, but will resume BIIF play against Waiakea at 6 p.m. next Thursday at Castle Gym. Pahoa will also play the Warriors next, tipping off at 7 p.m. Monday in Hilo.
KHS 34 -HHS 32
Kohala High girls basketball righted the ship Tuesday against Honoka‘a High following a big loss to Waiakea last weekend — beating the Dragons 34-32 and improving to 2-1 in the early season. Honoka‘a fell to 0-1 in its season opener.
Kalia Marquez was the Cowgirls’ leading scorer with nine points.
Honoka‘a’s Rylee Velazquez had 13.
Kohala next hosts Parker at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Kapaau. The Dragons will play Hilo at 6 p.m. Monday at home.
Tournaments
Starting today, Hilo High and Honoka‘a High will host boys and girls invitational tournaments.
